The Blue Poison Frog is also called a Poison Arrow Frog. Its length ranges from 3.0- 4.5 cm and weighs about 3 grams. Males can be distinguished from females by their larger front toe pads. These beautiful, deadly frogs come in a variety of blue colors with black spots on its head. Blue Poison Frogs can be found in the tropical rainforest in the southern part of Suriname, South America. Their diet consists of termites, crickets, ants, and fruit flies. Chemicals are derived from their food and synthesized into cutaneous (skin) poisons. Blue frogs eat tiny insects, flies, maggots, caterpillars, beetles, etc. With 200 micrograms of poison as their defense, Blue Poison Frogs are bold, aggressive, and appear to be fearless. Their poison is secreted through their skin and it would take only 2 micrograms to kill a human. The Choco Indians of Western Columbia dip their arrowheads or darts for a blowgun into the poison. They pin the frogs to the ground with a stick and wipe their arrows onto the frog’s skin, collecting the poison for hunting. Poison frogs are threatened by the depletion of the rainforest; making them protected under CITES Appendix II. By protecting the rainforest, we will protect the Blue Poison Frog and all the other inhabitants that share their home. |
