Canis lupus familiaris
A Scottish Terrier is a small but tough terrier. Scotties have a muscular head and neck and a body supported by short legs. Weighing around 18-22 lbs, Scotties are fast and strong dogs. The coat of the Scottie is a wiry, long, weather-resistant outer coat and a soft dense under coat. The common coat color ranges from dark gray to jet black, wheaton, or brindle. Scotties, like most terriers, are alert, quick, and feisty — perhaps even more so than other terrier breeds. The breed is known to be independent and self-assured, playful, intelligent, and has been nicknamed the 'Diehard' because of its rugged nature and endless determination. They are widely considered to be especially loyal to their owners, even as compared with other dogs. Scotties are very loving and can also be particularly stubborn. The Scottish terrier makes a good watchdog due to its tendency to bark only when necessary. Also, they are typically reserved with strangers — although this is not always the case and it is important to remember that all dogs differ. Scotties are a fearless breed that may be aggressive around other dogs unless introduced at an early age. FAMOUS SCOTTIES: Fala- President FDR’s Scottie Barney & Miss Beazley- President George W. Training Tip |
|
Wire crates are a great way to housebreak and train a new puppy. Make sure the crate is presented in a positive manner. The puppy should be kept in the crate unless it is outside while on leash or playing under supervision. Never use the crate as a punishing tool. Dogs will enjoy and relax in their crate once they become accustom. |
