Hummingbirds are small birds native to the Americas. Most common to North America is the Ruby-throated and Rufous species.  These birds are named for the “hum” sound made by their wings.  Hummingbirds are known for their ability to hover mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings in a figure- 8 motion; 15 to 80 beats per second.  These small birds are able to fly backwards or vertically and can maintain their position while drinking from a flower blossom with their long, thin beak.  A Hummingbird’s life span averages 3-4 years.  Among their predators include: larger birds, snakes, cats, frogs, spiders, and praying mantises.  Their average heartbeat is 1260 beats per minute.  Hummingbirds must fuel their metabolism with sugar nectar, consuming more than their normal body water content every single day.

Ever wonder where the Hummingbird that visits your garden or feeder went?  Females will not feed very far from their eggs.  Usually, you will observe the male feeding and then he will migrate as the days shorten, with the female to later follow course.  Review a Hummingbird Migration Map for the travels of these birds.

Hummingbirds

“Hummingbirds enter a hibernation-like state known as torpor.  In this state, the heart rate is slowed down to 50-180 beats per minute and the rate of breathing is slowed dramatically, reducing their need for food.”
