Many people have found that rabbits make wonderful pets.  The typical life span for a pet rabbit is roughly around 5 to 10 years.  Rabbits are very playful animals and great for entertaining children.  They will play with toys and chase objects.  A lot of rabbits, if socialized correctly, will develop peaceful relationships with cats and even dogs.  Even though most people choose to keep them in small cages, rabbits can be trained to live as free-roaming pets.  Be careful with leaving rabbits unattended; they will chew on cardboard, electrical cords, and carpet.  If you do choose to keep your rabbit in a cage, it is advised to keep them indoors.  They are very sensitive to weather changes, temperature changes, and predators.  A cage should have sufficient circulation and sanitation measures.  Be aware that some wire cages cause a rabbit’s toe nails to catch and can result in severe infection.  Rabbits can easily get along with other rabbits, but caution should be taken when introducing a new rabbit or placing them  in the same cage.  Rabbits, like most pets, require regular feed and water.  Rabbits enjoy eating hay or grass equaling about 70 % of their diet.  Feeding rabbits dark greens and leafy vegetables are a great way to add some variety to their diet.  When considering a commercial feed, try to avoid nuts because of their high fat percentage.  Fatty diets can be dangerous to most animals causing fatty liver disease.  Rabbits come in a variety of size and color. Have fun picking out the right one to add to your family!

Rabbit

In Japanese traditions, rabbits live on the moon where they make mochi, the popular snack of mashed sticky rice. This comes from interpreting the pattern of dark patches on the moon.  On the left side of the moon is a rabbit standing on its tiptoes, pounding an usu, a Japanese mortar.
